Traffic generates a large part of the city’s emissions, which is why many methods are being leveraged to increase the use of sustainable modes of transport. When more and more people walk, cycle or use public transport instead of driving, emissions caused by transport and mobility are reduced. This is why efforts are being made to increase the appeal of emission-free or low-emission modes of transport by shortening distances and also increasing rail traffic, building convenient cycling routes, ensuring an accessible and comfortable urban environment, and increasing the availability of park-and-ride parking.

In addition to this, the emissions of public, private and goods traffic are being reduced by supporting alternative energy sources and increasing the efficiency of goods traffic. The distribution infrastructure of alternative energy sources, such as electricity, are being developed by means of zoning, planning and cooperation with a variety of parties.

Land use planning can promote the use of sustainable modes of transport. These measures can be found under the theme Land use and construction.
